A Telephone Directory

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,

’twas grace my fears relieved

How precious did that grace appear,

the hour I first believed

- John Newton, Amazing Grace (lyrics)

What did I have to do to be saved? To the Rev Bill Bosker, the answer was obvious.

‘Oh Elizabeth, you don’t have to do anything to be saved!’ he cried. ‘Jesus has already done it for you!’

I didn’t understand at all. The last piece of the puzzle was missing, and I simply couldn’t find it.

‘I think we need a telephone directory’ said Bill. And off he went to get one. He came back and placed both my palms facing upwards. He waved the heavy telephone directory before me.

‘Let’s say that this book contains all of your sins. Not just everything you’ve already done, but everything in your life – past, present and future. A complete record of all you’ve ever done and will ever do against God.’

He indicated my left hand, palm up. ‘This hand represents you. Between you and God is …’ he placed the directory over my palm ‘…the complete record of your sins against him. There is no perfect fellowship with God because you are separated from him by your sins. When he looks down on you, this is what he sees.’

Then he indicated my right hand, palm up.

‘This hand represents Jesus. Sinless, in perfect fellowship with God. When God looks down on Christ, there is nothing separating them, no sin dividing them. Now, when Jesus died on the cross, he took upon himself all of your sin.’

At this point the telephone directory was transferred from my left hand to my right.

‘If you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, all of your sins are on him. He takes the burden of them, and the penalty for them. When God looks on Christ, that is where he now sees your sins. But when he looks upon you, there is now no record of sin.’

I looked at my empty, left palm. There was now nothing between me and God. No record of sins.

Bill opened up the Bible and read from Ephesians 2:8-9, which were quickly to become my favourite verses of the Bible: ‘For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.’ [NIV]

Bill also explained that if any religious leaders insist that we have to keep all sorts of rules in order to be right with God, then they are laying heavy burdens on men, as warned in the Bible. He spoke about the passage in Luke 11:43-46,

’Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces. ‘Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which people walk over without knowing it.’ One of the experts in the law answered him, ‘Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.’ Jesus replied, ‘And you experts in the law,
